Carol fights against the conventionalisms first and foremost I noticed was because she wears pants, you notice that none of the other women in town were wearing them. Also I feel she was different because she stood up for herself, when Tomi was picking on her she went after him and proved to him she wasn't going to take his crap. I feel that was because of her being raised in America, here women I feel don't put up with as much as Spanish speaking women do, it's not tolerated here. Here is America if a women it outspoken or independent it's normal that is how girls are raised anymore, in Spanish speaking countries for a woman to speak up for herself is taboo and the culture doesn't put up with it.

Volver
I feel that this film is a tribute to women because in the movie it shows a mother who's child was attacked by her step father, in turn the mother doesn't put up with it and deals with the situation head; that being that her daughter had stabbed the step father/husband and killed him and he is found laying dead on their kitchen floor, even though it was totally illegal she had to do what needed to be done period. Unfortunately children being molested happens everyday by close family members and unfortunately a lot of the times the situation it not talked about or dealt with, in this movie the mother cleans the mess up and moves on with life.
One superstitious belief that came up was with the villagers and the wind, it seems to make people mad, in fact no it was just natural diseases making people "mad". Also another superstitious belief that came up was when the aunt died and everyone in the village starting seeing Raumaida's mother around, when in truth she wasn't dead she had been in hiding for years taking care of the sick aunt.

Entre Nos
When Mariana's husband leaves the family is completely devastated her life and the children's life, but that's not to say she wasn't strong enough to get through it. Mariana did what any good mother would do and that was anything for her children, she was determined, creative, and she didn't take no for an answer.
In today's world I feel this happens a lot to mother's in the United States, I don't think it is as bad as what Mariana had to go through but this situations happens. I think Mariana's situation was a lot tougher because she was from a different country, had no formal education, job experience, and really wasn't great at speaking the language, but none of that stopped her. I think it takes a mothers strength to survive, she never gave up especially not on her kids.

The Official Story
Watching the movie I feel that Alicia was never able to get passed the fact that her child was the offspring of the murdered couple, it's obvious because she doesn't let the subject go with her husband. It started when she saw him off at the airport and when he got home from work the one day and the child's possible biological grandmother was sitting there. The most graphic display of her not being able to let go was when Alicia's husband beat her and smashed her fingers in between the door frame. The stress started to take it's toll on both Alicia and her husband and you saw their relationship fall apart completely but the end of the film. It never appeared to me that she was ever going to find peace with the subject manner, I felt it wasn't built into her personality.

Like Water For Chocolate
Let me first start off by saying that I really did like this movie, it got my attention!!
I want to discuss the topic of characters. With the first couple opening scenes right of the bat I thought of the fairytale story of Cinderella, although the movie and the actual story are different they did seem to share a couple of things. First off Tita's horrible horrible horrible mother, she definitely related to the mother in the story of Cinderella, they way she treated poor Tita and the fact that she made Tita take care of her till her death that's would be a torture sentence for anyone.The magical realism that I picked up on was when Tita thought she was pregnant and her mother's ghost kept coming back and haunting her, we all know that doesn't happen in real life well the part where the ghost pops up in the kitchen while your cooking. I noticed too the fact that Tita was the youngest and that she had two older sisters, Gertudis however ran away and found her own husband while the oldest stole Tita's boyfriend to which he became a husband right from under her nose.
Pedro on the other hand did not share any similarities with the prince in the story of Cinderella, in fact he almost reminded me or a wet dish rag! The fact that he led poor Tita on for so many years and expected her to wait and then was upset with her when she was to marry the doctor... he is a big fat baby who only thinks about himself.
I also noticed that at the end of the movie where Pedro dies in bed with Tita and the fact that Tita ate the matches which then took her life that was straight from the story Romeo and Juliet, only the tragic ending because I do not think that Romeo and Juliet's story really related to the movie in a whole.
Overall again I thought it was a really good movie, it's been my favorite so far!

Motorcycle Diaries
Watching this movie I saw one example that really got my attention where Ernesto displayed leadership qualities. When Ernesto and Mial came into contact with a man and his wife, they stated they were doctors, the man asked Ernesto what was wrong with his neck, after taking a look at it Ernesto stated it was a tumor while Mial was trying to play the man's condition off as a cyst, Ernesto stated that the man needed to seek treatment immediately. Mial didn't like the fact that Ernesto told the man the truth and was upset that Ernesto blew their changes of food and a play to stay, Ernesto stated he wasn't going to sacrifice the health of innocent people for his personal gain. That to me showed that Ernesto took honesty very seriously and upholding the truth was very important to him, he cared about the common good of people and wanted to help them.

The main differences on celebration between the United States of America and the Spanish speaking world is that in America food and beverages are steadily available to individuals where is the Spanish speaking parts of the world the food being shared may be the only food the family has for a week or two. Here is America, the American people think it is acceptable to state what they like and don't like when it comes to food, the host of the party makes sure there is a wide selection, where is the Spanish speaking parts food is food whether you like it or not you eat it, it isn't acceptable to say I don't like this so I will pass on it. I also think is America we are wasteful people, we don't hesitate to throw something away, where is South America you better think twice before you throw food away because you might not get anymore for a while.

El Mariachi
Let's face it and this is my opinion only, this movie was terrible not to mention completely cheesy, ok I feel better getting that off my chest!
This entire movie is filled with Mexican stereotypes first all the men in the movie besides maybe two I saw all were rocking the horrible mustaches, all but one or two were involved in gang activity, and what's with all the men carrying around the huge guns in public and running around like they were on Cops?
Is the gang violence commonly associated with Mexican culture... YES! I can think of three or four movies off the top of my head where the "Mexican" character was in a gang and or related to the gang activity.
When the main character of the movie states he just wants to be a Mariachi I think that he just wants to be like his father and grandfather, that it is a honor to play music and tell stories like his family did. When he was talking in the movie he stated "I am not as good as my father or grandfather yet, but I will be someday" I felt that he took pride if what he did for a living and it was important to him.
The Mariachi is a man that plays beautiful music and can tell a story with his music, his purpose in life is to travel around and share his stories with strangers. The Mariachi's job in life is to be a performer to have his guitar be his life.

Machuca
Watching this movie the interactions between Peter and Gonzalo I feel were real, both of these boys I think were very lonely and both wanted a true friend. Watching the whole movie and looking back at my notes I think the type of friendship they developed was that of a young boy that really wanted to have that connection with another boy. This movie is based on social classes and they make the two very distinct, I feel skin color wasn't so much an issue but that's my personal take, Gonzalo having very nice stuff and coming from a very nice home, whereas Peter comes from the poorest of the poor and practically lives in a shed.
The differences between the two social classes was astounding, like I stated before Gonzalo had the best of things and came from a very rich family, Peter on the other hand scrapped by and had really nothing.
The main message that I got from this film is that at the end of the day social class still counts, Peter is still poor and Gonzalo is still rich and in the end their friendship didn't matter everything was still based on status. I feel that in America we don't tend to have a class system per say, yes there is the really rich and the really poor, but I feel our government tries to help out (when sometimes they need to stay out of things) as much as possible. Some people are opposed to that while others are not, it all depends on your political views.

Under The Same Moon
Watching Under the Same Moon I must admit was a good movie even though I do disagree with some of the movies main concepts first and foremost, but over it was a moving movie and now that I am becoming a mother myself I must ask myself some of the same questions Rosario did.
Some of the main concepts that I picked up on for the mother leaving Carlos back in Mexico was she was leaving him with family that loved him and would take care of him, Rosario (the mother) was going on a dangerous mission to get across the border and when she did get across the border she would have no family to help with Carlos. I also think she left Carlos behind thinking it wasn't going to take so long for her to find a way to get Carlos across the border,come to find out when she got into the US she hired a lawyer that stole $4,000.00 from here making her having to start all over.
Rosario made the difficult decision to leave Carlos for the US because Mexico is a terrible place, the US provides so many more opportunities even though the work is hard and pay is bad, but not as bad as in Mexico. As for the fact if the decision was hard to leave her son behind... YES... that's a decision that would break so many mothers hearts, you know Rosario is miserable in the US because she is always thinking about her son back in Mexico. Some instances that show that is when Rosario will not date anyone because she wants her son to be here, she feels she has to make her life miserable because she couldn't get Carlos across.
When Carlos was living away from his mother he had to deal with family members picking on him, as well as a very sick grandmother who eventually passed away leading to Carlos making the desicion to leave for the US. When Rosario was living apart from Carlos she was depressed all the time, she missed her son so much that she wouldn't enjoy what was going on around her.
Would a mother in the United Stated made that same decision that Rosario made, I think no, because in America the thought is not matter how tough and hard life is we are a unit and nothing will ever break us apart. Here is America we have child protective services which put the fear of God in most mothers because one simple phone call can cause so much trouble and despair, that most mothers will do everything to protect their children and for the family to stay together as a single unit.
